Encounter Labs draws from a rich and colourful tradition of group experience, one that stretches back over sixty years across psychology, social science, and the human potential era.

From cradle to grave, our problems, challenges, hopes and fears exist in relation to others. We are relational beings, our conditioned patterns, the ones that shape how we feel, act, and see the world, are inherently relational. In the early encounter movement in California, live group experiences were created as spaces where people could genuinely connect, experiment, and evolve. These social oases offered something modern life rarely does, the experience of being fully human with others. Today we are more digitally connected than ever and more humanly isolated than ever. For all its benefits, technology has come at a price to our relational lives. Carl Rogers, one of the great psychotherapists of the twentieth century, explored self-actualisation, the idea that we are all naturally growing and evolving, and that we block this process by learning to hide our true selves in order to survive. Live group experiences provide the perfect environment to test, practice, and master authentic, congruent behaviour , so that the self-actualising journey can continue.

Encounter Labs is inspired by a rich tradition of group experience. By Kurt Lewin, who pioneered the first social laboratories in the 1940s. By the encounter group movement that flourished in California in the 1960s. By the Gestalt movement, which brought creativity and embodied awareness to group process., psychodrama & systemic wisdom. Finally by the wider body of social science, the deep exploration of the forces, dynamics, roles, and scripts that shape human behaviour.

We can talk about these things between us, read about them in books, or explore them with a therapist. But it is only in the group, with others, in real time, that they truly come alive. The group is the method. The group is the remedy. The way forward is through the group.

FAQs

What is an encounter group?

An encounter group is a live group experience designed to create the conditions for genuine human contact, authentic self-expression, and real connection. Rooted in over sixty years of social science and humanistic psychology, the encounter group uses the group itself as the primary instrument of change. Each session draws on a blend of group inquiry, embodied practices, experiential games, radical honesty, and themed conversation. These groups are a space to develop genuine self-awareness, break out of limiting patterns, and reconnect with your own aliveness and potential.
